Needle Lace Workshop
Public Program
Join exhibiting artist Maggie Hensel-Brown to learn and develop new skills in needle lacemaking. This introductory two-day course will allow participants to explore the foundational principles of needle lace and guide them as they begin their lacemaking journey. Under Maggie’s guidance, participants will learn the techniques and intricacies of needle lace, creating a tiny, contemporary twist on a centuries-old tradition.
Maggie Hensel-Brown (b. 1990) is an Australian textile artist who works in needle lace, a practice requiring little more than a needle and thread – and infinite patience. Inspired by historical pictorial needle lace panels, Maggie creates ‘precious commemorations’ of the everyday moments and things that populate her personal world. Hensel-Brown graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Newcastle, NSW, before learning the needle lace technique at a conference of the Australian Lace Guild in 2015. Her practice has since been solely dedicated to lacemaking, which she pursues through continued study, practice, and teaching of the art form.
